I’ve never been greatly enamoured of the concept of cheap iphone 4s cases cases. You pay all that money for a beautiful design that Jony Ive and his team sweated over for months, then hide it in some butt-ugly plastic case.

I’ve always just used a matte screen-protector (as much to remove reflections as protect the screen from damage) and a Zagg stick-on leather cover for the rear, leaving the phone reasonably well-protected from scratches but without making it look like something bought from Toys-R-Us.

But I was intrigued when I saw that a couple of companies had brought out iPhone cases made from real wood. I love wood as a material, so decided to give the cases a try. On test here are the Zagg ifrogz Natural Wood Case for iPhone 5 and the Miniot iWood for iPhone 3/4/5 …

Sure, an iPhone 4 for $0 is mighty tempting. But those free or near-free older phones come at a cost. To get that special pricing, you’ll generally have to lock yourself into a two-year contract. In the process, you’ll be locking yourself into yesterday’s technology. “[That] older model will quickly show its age,” says Jeff Richardson, a partner at Adams and Reese in New Orleans, who also runs the iPhone J.D. blog ( iphonejd.com). “Attorneys should spend the extra few dollars to buy the current model.” Keep cheap iphone 4 cases in mind, too, that the latest model may have a feature that more than justifies the additional outlay. An iPhone 5, for example, works with fast 4G networks — something the 3G-compatible iPhone 4 doesn’t.

Many law firms and companies require the use of passcodes on enterprise smartphones. And for good reason: Passcodes can be an effective way to keep prying eyes off the data stored on a device. Unfortunately, passcodes aren’t always used, or are not used wisely. Part of the cheap iphone 4s cases problem is that a fdsfE2ds passcode feature typically isn’t activated by default. On the iPhone, for example, you need to go into the settings menu and activate it. But don’t stop there.
