‘Leftover Men’ Are Buying Tons Of Sex Toys

The combination of China’s one-child policy and a widespread preference for male children has led to a significant gender imbalance in China. In certain age groups men outnumber women by a fair margin, and while that male sex toys has led to a lot of complicated social issues, at least one industry is really happy about it: Sex toy manufacturers say the unattached “leftover” men are buying tons and tons of sex toys, and business has never been better.

“It turns out China’s ‘leftover men’ are, if you’ll pardon the word choice, stimulating the economy – the sex toy industry to be precise,” Shanghaiist reports.

The sexy industries have long been rumored to be recession-proof, but sex toy sellers at the 10th annual International Adult Toys and Reproductive Health Exhibition in China say they’ve seen increases of 30 to 40 percent in sales over the previous year, and they credit male buyers with much of the sex toy sales boom.

“Last year, we enjoyed 30 percent jump in sales for men’s products,” said a representative from Fun Factory, a German company that manufactures toys for grown-ups. He told Shanghai Daily that their sales had doubled across Asia, and said their main fashion sunglasses buyers were “leftover and indoorsy men.”ssdEfg7

People talking about “leftover” men and cheap sexy lingerie are usually referring to people between the ages of 25 and 35. Specifics vary wildly because exact population numbers are difficult if not impossible to come by, but some estimates hold that there are 136 men for every 100 women born after 1980, which is often cited as the reason there are so many single men running about.

“Being single, a question is always asked: what about their sex life? Toys and sex products may be a solution,” said a vendor named Wang who was at the event hawking “sexual prowess” boosters.
